Evert de Beijer

Evert de Beijer studied graphic design at the Graphic School and the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam where he became interested in photography and animated filmmaking. He enrolled at the Dutch Film & TV Academy to study camera and directing. In 1979 he graduated with his first animated film ‘Gerard’ which was shown with great succes at the International Animation Festival ‘Ottawa 1980’. His second film ‘The Characters’was much acclaimed for its production-design and cinematography and was awarded a ‘Gold Hugo for Animation’ at the 'International Chicago filmfestival' in 1986, a ‘Jury Award for Graphic Design’ at 'Zagreb 1986' animated filmfestival, the 'First Prize' at the 'Los Angeles Animation Celebration' in 1987 and a ‘Mention de Qualité’ in 1987 by the Centre National de la Cinematographie in Paris. The film was released in the context of the ‘Mike and Spike tour of Animation’ in the USA and shown on television in many countries. The Dutch animated film community elected the film as ‘Best Dutch Animated Film of the 20th Century’. On the strength of the film de Beijer was commissioned to do an animated 'Nike' commercial for a running shoe.

His film ‘Hotel Narcis’ (1993) was awarded ‘Best Design’ at the International Animation Festival 'Ottawa 1994' and a ‘Norman Roger Palmares du Son’ at the 'Annecy Animation Festival' in 1995 for the originality of the soundtrack. Stimulated by this succes he developed his drawing- and filmstyle and acquainted himself with 2D and 3D computer animation graphics and sound. He also publicized a serie of computer generated cartoons in a major Dutch newspaper. One of the drawings inpired him to make the computer animated film ‘Car Craze’ (2003) that won special jury distinctions in 'Annecy 2003' and 'Zagreb 2004' for the innovating style and design and the original approach to 3D computer animation, a 'Grand Prix' at the Energy Filmfestival 2005 in Lausanne and an 'AniZone Award' at the Holland Animation Film Festival in Utrecht 2004. In 2010 his film ‘Get Real!’ was released again a computeranimated film. The film was selected in competition of many important film festivals and was also also shown in the context of the 'Sophia design festival' (Bulgaria). It was considered a revelation by many people in the animated film community and was awarded the ‘Best Visuals’ prize at 'Fantoche' animated filmfestival (Baden) in 2010 , a 'First Prize' at the 'Animatou' animated filmfestival (Geneve) in 2011 and a 'Special Mention' at the 'Berlinale' 2011.

In 2011 Evert de Beijer was awarded the Prize of the City of Wiesbaden for his artistic contribution to animated film. He is currently working on his new computer animated filmproject ‘Lucy’ that is targeted to have it's release in 2014.
